This practice is bodies and positions of a school. It asks us a series of questions about said topic where it tries to get us to understand who exactly forms part of the centre. the functions of these people, the regulations they must follow, the overlapping functions, who is best to perform these, our opinion and finally whether we would make any kind of improvements.
The preliminary ideas that I have about this practice are the governing positions and the governing positions (director, head of studies, secretary) and the governing bodies (school council and teachers board). I am doing this post shortly after studying the theory lesson, therefore I already know most of the functions that each one executes meaning that this practice, along with the knowledge with my teammates, was quite easy.
The task was simply to name the functions of the governing bodies. The director is in charge of representing the schools, direct and coordinate activities, in charge of employees of the centre, among other things. The head of studies we learned that he substituted the director when he doesn't attend, he organises student participation in activities, etc. We understood that the secretary also had an important job as they must maintain and organise the use of teaching materials, prepare the centres budget plan... The teachers board help us understand what their job was and this was to establish criteria for student orientation, tutoring and evaluation, amongst other things. The school council apparently also has an important role. It evaluates projects and rules, it reports on students admission and many other things. We also had to say which were the overlapping functions and what body would best perform these functions. Lastly, and what I believe to be the most important, we each had to give our own opinion about the different bodies of the educational centres and what aspects must be improved. This is really important because you get to hear other peoples point of view and maybe, they might even convince you.
The hardest part for me to understand were the overlapping functions of the different bodies. I didn't understand how one function could be done by other people. This is something I need to work on. I would have found it easier if every governing body or position did particular and certain jobs. Having said that, the forth question of this practice states just that, but instead of asking why my team thought every body and position should have a certain job, it asked who would be best to execute these overlapping functions. This being asked, we came to the conclusion to give the authority and responsibility to the director as he occupies the highest position in the school. To understand this we couldn't find any websites or videos so we had no other choice but to look through one by one on the powerpoint and see which functions overlapped. The author that helped us was our very own Gonzalo.
The knowledge I can generate is, with the help of this video, the general functions of a director. Sometimes if you learn a certain topic its better if you hear it from someone else rather than reading it. This video helped me have a different view over the functions of a director. The lady in the video dives the directors functions in three different parts: skill, diligence and avoid conflict. If we talk about the first one, it means that they have the skill to anticipate conflicts. Diligence is the care towards other people to avoid harm or other expenses. It means knowing all aspects and documents so that you are prepared to mitigate those risks. Finally, directors avoids conflict by being able to correctly use the measures need to resolve any type of misunderstanding or major conflict.
We think that each body has important functions that must be done according to the law, to avoid problems. Therefore, if all the members of each group follows the regulations this will provide the students with the same opportunities and options to develop their ideas and projects. Moreover, if the students receive enough support from teachers, they will improve their school performance.
From our point of view, education should not be instrumentalized for political purposes. In the last decades, Spain has approved up to 7 different laws on education, greater stability, facilitating the achievement of better results.
We also think that the way the Teacher’s Board manage classes needs to be improved and changed. For instance, if we brought back a doctor from 100 years ago and put them in a current operating room, they probably wouldn’t know how to do the operation because many new techniques have been invented. On the other hand, if we brought back a teacher from 100 years ago, avoiding the digital board and the computers, they would be able to manage the class. Practices have not changed as teachers still stand in front of a class expecting the students to take notes and listen.
If we talk about the Teacher’s Board, we understand that they elect teacher representatives for the School Council. This is a good idea as we believe that they would know who are the better people for the job, but this should be approved by the Director as they are the person who knows what is best for the school.
As far as we are concerned, the Director should have a little bit more power to take some decisions. Nowadays the Director doesn’t have enough resources to implant new projects in the school as most of the activities and curriculum are given by the government.
In conclusion, we can say that education is an essential aspect in society and it is commonly being underestimated. Furthermore, the task that teachers execute is constantly being questioned. With this, politicians often take decisions to please.
